Types of Mold

3/6/2019 (Permalink)

What is mold you ask?  Mold is a type of fungi that exist everywhere and only need moisture and a compatible surface to survive.  With that being said, there are many different species of mold.   Some types of mold can be unharmful while others can be toxic.  It is important to know the type of mold you may be dealing with if there is mold growth in your home or business.  Each type has different unique characteristics and growth patterns.  Below are a few common kinds of mold species found in homes or business:

Acremonium: Found on dead plants and soil, it grows indoors on paper and drywall tiles

Alternaria: Commonly found on food, plants, rotting farmland manure and is resistant to most fungicides.

Aspergillus: There are many species of Aspergillus

Botrytis: Associated with plants, high humidity levels and plenty of plants attract this mold.

Does Bleach Get Rid of Mold?

2/26/2019 (Permalink)

Did you know that bleach does NOT kill mold?  This is a common misconception that bleach can treat any kind of mold problems.  According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has taken a strong stance against using bleach to treat mold due to:

  • The active ingredient of bleach is hydrogen peroxide and the is used for disinfecting and the removal of stains
  • Bleach does not work on porous surfaces, but mold loves porous areas. Bleach is made up of 90% water, so once the chlorine quickly evaporates, you are left with a ton of moisture that will help mold continue to grow. Even though it may look like bleach has killed the mold infecting your home, it is only the top layer that has been killed, and the mold’s roots within the walls will easily come back stronger.
  • Bleach can weaken the surfaces you put it on. When bleach is put on a surface such as wood, it can begin to eat away at the fibers. Even a small change to an important structural piece of your home could be disastrous.

Understanding Mold

2/13/2019 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all molds from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all molds, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  •  Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  •  Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, SERVPRO of Victoria can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold.
